Halfway between Trinidad and Las Animas, this property is well situated for hunting and camping purposes.

Apishapa SWA

Apishapa State Wildlife Area is 7,000 acres of wilderness at the junction of several canyons approximately 30 miles east of Walsenburg. Except for a few hunters, it is seldom visited. It hosts deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and numerous other animals. The canyon itself is about 300 feet deep with sandstone cliffs and rock jumbles. There is the possibility of caves. It was the home of a farming society that existed about the same time as (and probably traded with) the Anasazi or, as they are now called, the Ancestral Pueblo peoples. In some areas, there are the remains of early homesteads.
